We did it! My husband and I travelled on what felt like the longest flight of my life with a short stop over in Malaysia to the beautiful Maldives. The flight only seemed so long because we lashed out on the expensive accomodation so took the cheapest flights possible with Air Asia, surrounded by the entire Malaysian Commonwealth Games Team, squishy was an understatement. Anyway, we arrived in this paradise to immediately learn that their are 190 island that make up the Maldives. Our first over nights stop was in Male.

The beautitful Vui Bar at our Resort, Centara Ras Fushi, Maldives

Now, Male is absolutely nothing like the pictures you see of the Maldives. It is the capital city and for us that was an absolute must do. Resort life as perfect as it is, has no sense of reality or culture. Male was a hub of culture, with 100% of the population following the Islamic faith. What an incredible country so dedicated to their faith, having it drive all that they do. At first it was frightening to wake up in the middle of the night to a man singing an Islamic prayer, inviting all people to come and pray. This singing was projected across the city through loud speakers. I was inspired by their sheer dedication to their religion, so much so that each person wakes before the sun to pray. What a wonderfully united country it was indeed. As an Australian I couldn't imagine a life like this, as our country is so multicultural.

In saying this Male, itself is very much a concrete jungle and a third world country. From it's exterior it seems like it is well structured, however the roads are chaos and there are people building towers in thongs. The country though is not cheap, I remember paying $30 USD for a whole fish with a side of chips, pretty much the same price I would pay in Australia.

The system of travel from the Airport to the Island of Male, was very simple and straight forward. A ferry leaves every 10 minutes and costs $1 USD per person. They are very kind people who will offer to carry your suit case on board and then take it off again for you on the otherside. Most hotels will also arrange transport for you to and from the airport. The wonderful staff at the Novina Hotel, organised and paid for our Ferry and Taxi as part of the cheap price we paid for our room. Would reccomend them as a excellent accomodation choice in Male City.

Now lets get to why we are really here. Maldives as a honeymoon or anniversary travel destination. My new husband and stayed for 7 nights at the Centara Ras Fushi Resort.

Here are the 5 reasons why it was the ideal destination for a honeymoon or anniversary:

1. Affordability

The Maldives, no matter the island you stay on is an expensive adventure. The resorts are costly, however, there are some exceptional deals floating around that you might be lucky enough to get your hands on. We were lucky enough to snag one through Luxury Escapes, which had us stay in an over water villa for 7 nights, all inclusive deal including transfers for $5,500 AUD. Seems cheap but this is not a cheap as any regular holiday. This is why I recommend that if you are going to do it, do it for an extra special occasion.

2. No Kids Rule

Some of the resorts, including the one we stayed in have a no children rule. I completely agree. Who on such a luxury adventure wants children running around? Furthermore, who would want their children bugging them in such a relaxing atmosphere? Enough said here, leave the kids at home.

3. It's Romantic

The crystal blue oceans, the walks across the beach at sunset, the couples massages and cocktails by the pool. The serenity is something I could only dream of until I stepped foot onto this paradise island. A honeymoon or anniversary get away should be as romantic as you can imagine and their are plenty of ways to amp up the romance on a trip like this. Our resort offered a complementary sunset romantic 5 course meal by the beach. How much more romantic can it get??

4. Everyone else is on their honeymoon

During our time in the Maldives we met upwards of 15 couples. 5 of them got married on the same day as us and now we have a facebook group where we have planned a 10 year anniversary trip together. About 5 other couples were also on a belated honeymoon. 3 of those couples were on important anniversary trips and then their were 2 couples who were just travelling because. It was so wonderful meeting other couples and sharing our wedding stories.

5. Not a place for friends

On our trip, I saw 1 group of friends together at the resort. After talking to them, they regretted the trip purely because it is such a romantic place. They felt jealous of all the loved up couples, and how could you not? Between couples kissing, taking cute photos and eating candle lit dinners its impossible to escape the coupley atmosphere.
